You don’t have to wait until Spring to get your clubs out! Play in the annual Snow Golf Charity Tournament as part of Port Colborne’s Winter Sportsfest held every year at Whisky Run! This annual event is open to the public and draws an average of 40 golf enthusiasts who just can’t wait for warmer weather!
“It’s so much fun – we use a tennis ball, instead of a golf ball and hit towards a target object, instead of a golf ball and hit to the Foot Golf Holes that are 10x larger than regular cups” one player says. “I recommend bringing only 2 clubs with you (a 7 iron and a hybrid work best)– carrying a full bag of clubs around the course walking in 2 ft of snow is just unnecessary – but would be a great workout!”
Owner Lou Nieuwland originally organized the tournament for the first annual Sportsfest celebration in the year 2000 and course has hosted the event ever since. “The proceeds from the event go to charity every year. Port Colborne Special Olympics Golf, the Port Colborne Youth Soccer, Port Colborne Youth Basketball and Junior Golf Program are the beneficiaries.
“We start with registration before lunch with some hot chocolate, coffee and snacks to warm you up!” Lou recommends wearing full snow gear and bringing an extra tennis ball with you. “Then you’re off on the course playing in a two person scramble format” he adds “we even have closest to the target and longest drive markers out to create some friendly competition!”
The round takes about 1 ½-2hrs to play 11 holes, depending on how deep the snow is. 2015 saw the most snow the event has ever had – in some places, as deep as 3 ft! Other years, the weather was so mild the players actually opted to play with a golf ball, instead of a tennis ball!
Following the round, players come in for some much deserved homemade chili and celebrate the day with draw prizes and awards.
“It really gets me excited for the upcoming season. Just to be able to get out onto the course and swing a club helps with all the cabin fever!”
