May 18th @ 11:30pm to 6:30pm
Grab your Orange shirt and head over to Whisky Run on Saturday May 18th, 2019! Every year, a sold out crowd fills the course decked out in orange and in pursuit of the Dutch Open Championship title!
This highly anticipated event started in 2004, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Nieuwland family immigrating to Niagara, Canada from Holland in 1954. Lou Nieuwland, current owner, along with his older brother Hank, who passed away in 2007, and their parents, crossed the ocean (in what Lou will tell you was very rocky waters), to land in Halifax, Nova Scotia. They made their way by train to Niagara on the Lake, where they grew up, no doubt, causing all kinds of trouble!
In 2006, the tournament also paid memorial tribute to long time member and friend, Rene Smits, and has since become a memorial in his name. The Smits family brings out a large group to participate in the event every year! They help celebrate Rene and how much he loved the game of golf and playing at Whisky Run.
“This is one of our favourite events of the year. And despite what the name suggests, you don’t have to be Dutch to play!”
The Dutch Open is a Four Person Orange Ball Scramble, where two scores are recorded: a regular three person scramble score and an orange ball score which is played by the 4th team member and rotated hole by hole.
“All of the food is Dutch Inspired and our chefs put together a delicious spread! Included is a lunch during registration, 18 holes golf & ride, another Dutch inspired dinner, prizes, awards and draws. Out on the course, the theme continues with a Wooden Shoe Closest to the Pin competition among others, Dutch drink specials and added bonuses!”
Low Scramble and Low Orange ball are awarded in all three divisions: Mixed, Men’s and Ladies Champions.
Come out to Whisky Run this May Long Weekend, where tulips are in bloom, the Heineken is flowing, and the golf is GROOT!
